Do you think Manga will ever dethrone The Super Hero genre as the top spot?
Before 2008, Manga was making an impact around the world, many calling it a phenomenon and one of Japan's greatest achievements. But now they seem to have taken a toll on their numbers, selling only fractions of what they used to and barely making the top 500 list of comics making up usually less than a percent (0.35%) to, if they're lucky 2.5% (on very rare occasions). The only thing that they seem to do better is in trade paperback form selling a total of 29 of them (Viz, tokyopop, bandai combined) out of 300. Still not good, but better than what they average on comic sales. Do you think they'll ever pick up again and dethrone the Mainstream comics (Super heroes & Anti heroes), or do you think they'll plummet even lower to the point where they go underground and only as special apps online?
If you don't know what trade paperback is, it means they collect several issues and put in one big book. That is usually what form Manga is by they way, which explains its thickness.
I think one of the big problems that Manga and Western comics (like from the States--I'm not referring to cowboy stuff) alike are suffering from is that everything's going digital whether it makes sense or not. People are pushing for electronic readers to replace books--and it is driving bookstores and specialty shops that sell comic books out of business. Many grocery stores don't even sell _magazines_ any more, never mind comic books or manga.
Having said that....
_If_ the printed comic book, of either the Western culture or Japanese-inspired sort survives, it will have to evolve much as it has. And then some. Manga pressures American comic book writers to pay more attention to character-oriented stories and to look outside of super-heroics at least once in a while....and well, to suggest that American comic books don't influence Manga? The person saying that has obviously never heard of Dragonball, Naruto, or countless other action-oriented manga.
If anything I think what will happen is that the boundaries will blur. Sure, the Big Two in comic books will hold on to their superheroes--they are intellectual property and a license to make money after all. But some properties on the other side will become much the same way--iconic properties much as the DBZ characters are now.
And likewise, there will be many brave people in the more independent side of US comics who will explore the things anime does, if in their own way. Maybe we won't have so many schoolgirls. But if the sales spikes comic books have from "zombie plots" are any indication, it's a sign that people do want to at least _try_ to expand into other genres such as personal horror.
I personally think there's plenty of room, at least with the independent publishers, for new writers and artists alike to pursue things of a more science fiction bent, or to tell more real-world stories that are more personal, maybe a bit warmer and more down-to-earth than usual for the capes-and-tights crowds. Get away from the huge events and the infamous "Wizard Promo splash page" and maybe there will be some creative breathing room.
But hey, what do I know? Maybe the future isn't in comic books, but in online animation. There are quite a few folks online who do stick-figures and do them well....it's only a matter of getting people out of "fight club" mode and into narration mode....
