how to get my 2 kittens to go to the bathroom in the kitty litter box.?
well i have two 10mths old kittens. they used to live outside, when i moved here in sept. 2009 they were about 3 months old and never let me picked them up. now i got them inside since Jan. 2010. sometimes they go into the litter box but other times they go on clothes and other spots. my mom gets relly pissed. i want to keep them and she wants to get rid of them. so i want to train them harder to only go to the bathroom in the litter box.that way i can keep them. so how do i do that?
confine them to one room until they show good litter box usage.
you should also make sure there are enough litter boxes - the general rule is one box per cat plus one - and they should be cleaned often, especially while you are trying to retrain them to the box.
You can let them wander around the house after a few weeks of being limited in space, but only when you are around to observe them. Return them to the room when you go out, go to sleep or are severely distracted. After a few weeks of this you can start letting them have freedom when you are home but not directly supervising them. Once they have shown they will return to the box to go, then you know they are ready to have full run of the house full time.
You also want to provide boxes around the house while you are retraining. One on each side of the house and on each level of the house. You can slowly start eliminating these as they continue to show they will use a box.
Cats will not use a box if they feel insecure while using the box (since using the box makes them very vulnerable) so make sure they are in quiet locations and they aren't being interrupted while using it. Cats are very sensitive to cleanliness, so scoop them often.
Praise works and punishment doesn't. Praise them when they are around the litter box or when they have just used it. Ignore mistakes unless you catch them in the act - at which point simply act very disappointed not angry.
