Is it possible to take up MMA classes without a martial arts backround?
I know it is best to learn something else before joining an MMA class, but is it possible to join without a backround in martial arts? I figure if it is a mix of all of the best moves from other arts, then it would be alright. Right?
You can certainly go in cold, as a matter of fact I bet most people do. Many people who have no experience in any art will try new things, especially if those things are popular, like MMA.
However, don't make the mistake of thinking that MMA is "a mix of the best moves form other arts". It is in fact not so, MMA does not take the most effective moves from arts, for this would claim that anything not used in MMA isn't useful. This is completely false. Many moves not seen in MMA are useful, if not more useful, than the moves seen in MMA. In the street, it is a much better idea to use a palm strike to the face than to punch to the face and risk breaking your knuckles. Also, many moves once considered "flashy and ineffective" are steadily making their way into MMA, i.e. many spinning kicks are now beginning to be utilized.
Also many submissions, such as the arm bar, are shown improperly in MMA. Any joint lock in the street is not meant for submission or to be slow applied pressure, but rather a quick break/snap. Thus the pin is in consequential as you aren't trying to pin the other person, but break his/her arm. This means that you don't put your legs across and risk them doing damage to your foot or tendons.
MMA certainly takes many different effective moves, but there's more out there than the moves shown in MMA. Also, MMA in the ring should never be taken as real fighting. If you take an MMA class with emphasis on the street, then you'll be able to defend yourself, but MMA is no better or worse than other arts.
